Fair Labor Standards Act
Individuals who are training for employment in an executive, administrative, professional, outside sales or computer employee capacity, who are not actually performing duties whithin these capacities.
- The training, even though it includes actual operation of the facilities of the employer, is similar to that which would be given in a vocational school.
- The training is for the benefit of the trainees or students.
- The trainees or students do not displace regular employees, but work under close supervision.
- The employer that provides the training receives no immediate advantage from the activities of the trainees or students and, on occasion, his operations may even be impeded.
- The employer and the trainees or students understand that the trainees or students are not entitled to wages for the time spent in training.

Common Disciplines

- Business
- Produce financial and market intelligence by querying data repositories and generating periodic reports. Devise methods for identifying data patterns and trends in available information sources
- Marketing
- Plan, direct, or coordinate advertising policies and programs or produce collateral materials, such as posters, contests, coupons, or giveaways, to create extra interest in the purchase of a product or service for a department, an entire organization, or on an account basis.
- Tech and Programming
- Create, modify, and test the code and scripts that allow computer applications to run. Work from specifications drawn up by software and web developers or other individuals. May develop and write computer programs to store, locate, and retrieve specific documents, data, and information.
- Design
- Develop and test layouts, interfaces, functionality, and navigation menus to ensure compatibility and usability across browsers or devices.

Training For F-1 Students

F-1 students can volunteer and train with Comida For Familias, Inc. to extend their stay while learning in professional environment. The service volunteers/trainees provide must be related to the foreign national's degree program. For those who are not on a 17-month extension, and where this practice does not violate any labor laws, this employment may include those listed in the SEVP Policy Guidance 1004-03.

Have questions about our training? OPT is temporary employment that is directly related to an F-1 student’s major area of study. Once we know what is your field of study, you will then begin working on an activity where you will apply your knowledge and skills.
