Volunteer Defined

Under 29 CFR 553.101, a volunteer is defined as, "an individual who performs hours of service for a public agency for civic, charitable, or humanitarian reasons, without promise, expectation or receipt of compensation for services rendered, is considered to be a volunteer during such hours, collaborating with others to present a functioning webapp for the public."*

Volunteer Orientation

Positions

These are the most common positions that are filled within the organization. If you have any other discipline, you may still apply for registration and we can discuss the details through a call.

Business

Produce financial and market intelligence by querying data repositories and generating periodic reports. Devise methods for identifying data patterns and trends in available information sources

Marketing

Plan, direct, or coordinate advertising policies and programs or produce collateral materials, such as posters, contests, coupons, or giveaways, to create extra interest in the purchase of a product or service for a department, an entire organization, or on an account basis.

Tech and Programming

Create, modify, and test the code and scripts that allow computer applications to run. Work from specifications drawn up by software and web developers or other individuals. May develop and write computer programs to store, locate, and retrieve specific documents, data, and information.

Design

Develop and test layouts, interfaces, functionality, and navigation menus to ensure compatibility and usability across browsers or devices.

* You may be eligibile to deduct out-of-pocket expenses when you travel for Comida For Familias. Expenses must be unreimbursed, directly connected with the services, expenses you had only because of the services you gave, and not personal, living or family expenses. The types of expenses that you may be able to deduct include: air, rail and bus transportation, car expenses, lodging costs, cost of meals, and taxi or other transportation costs between the airport or station and your hotel. See IRS publication p926. for more information on charitable contributions.

A strongly affiliated volunteer is someone who has a regular, ongoing relationship with our organization. They typically commit to specific projects, attend regular meetings, and work closely with our team to achieve organizational goals.

We offer various opportunities including: • Software Development • UI/UX Design • Content Creation • Project Management • Research & Documentation • Community Outreach

You may be able to deduct some of your costs including travel. They must be necessary while you are away from home. All costs must be: • unreimbursed, • directly connected with the services, • expenses you had only because of the services you gave, and • not personal, living or family expenses Your charity work has to be real and substantial throughout the trip. You can’t deduct expenses if you only have nominal duties or don’t have any duties for significant parts of the trip. No, You can’t deduct the value of your time or services that you give to charity. This includes income lost while you serve as an unpaid volunteer for a qualified charity.

Requirements vary by role, but generally we look for: • Relevant skills or willingness to learn • Commitment to our mission • Good communication skills • Ability to work independently and in teams

No, these are volunteer positions.

Yes! Most of our volunteer opportunities are remote-friendly. We use various collaboration tools to ensure effective communication and project management regardless of location.

Comida For Familias, Inc. is a 509(a)(2) California Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation, which means we are publicly supported by investments, and gross receipts from permitted sources (e.g., grants, donations, and supervision and trainee fees). It also shows proof to the IRS that you are strongly affiliated with our organization.

You can fundraise in the name of Comida For Familias, Inc. Complete the a Collection Agreement Form, and start fundraising to cover the cost of your registration fee! (Contact us to request a form first.) We will then waive the fee after you reach $270.
